[The 1 p.m. voting session has finally started, about 40 minutes late. will keep you posted...]
The New Jersey Assembly is gathering this afternoon to vote on a couple of dozen bills ? including one on the schedule that would permit the Atlantic City casinos to offer online versions of their table games, including poker.
This is an amended version of a bill that passed in the Assembly, 63-11, almost two years ago.
Will the vote be as decisive this time?
It?s hard to say. The previous bill undoubtedly was aided by language that could have provided up to $30 million over three years to subsidize horse racing purses. That was a political winner in North and Central Jersey near the state?s racetracks or breeding farms, although Governor Christie wouldn?t stand for it.
That language is gone now, in an attempt to sway Christie into approving an issue that he vetoed in 2011. It?s not clear that the removal would be enough to flip votes from yes to no, however.
Keep in mind that not all of these bills will get extensive consideration from every Assembly member. So we?ll see if supporters can simply remind less-focused voters of the previous tally.
Also of interest is whether some Republican splinter off into ?no? votes. They are in the minority in the Assembly, but a closer vote, if it happens, might be a tipoff that Christie?s aides have passed along their resistance to even this revised version of the bill.
Overall, I count 34 Assembly bills, 3 Assembly Continuing Resolutions, 7 state Senate bills, and 2 Senate Continuing Resolutions on the docket today?..
