Factbox: Key points in tentative deal to avert "fiscal cliff"

(Reuters) - Hours before a deadline for $600 billion in automatic tax increases and spending cuts, U.S. Senate leaders on Monday were working out the details of a deal to avert the so-called "fiscal cliff."

President Barack Obama cautioned there were still "issues left to resolve" in the tentative deal, which still needs approval from the Senate as well as the Republican-led House of Representatives.

Here are details of the deal as it stood at midday on Monday, according to a source familiar with the talks:

* Postpones the $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts over 10 years, known as the "sequester." But there was not yet agreement about how long Congress would have to negotiate spending cuts and revenue increases to replace the sequester.

* Raises $600 billion in revenue over 10 years through a series of tax increases on wealthier Americans.

* Permanently extends tax cuts made in 2001 by Republican former President George W. Bush for income below $400,000 per individual, or $450,000 per family. Income above that level would be taxed at 39.6 percent, up from the current top rate of 35 percent.

* Above that income threshold, capital gains and dividends tax rates would return to 20 percent, from 15 percent.

* Caps personal exemptions and itemized deductions for income above $250,000, or $300,000 per household.

* Raises estate tax rate to 40 percent for estates of more than $10 million per couple, up from the current level of 35 percent.

* Includes a permanent fix for the alternative minimum tax.

* Extends unemployment insurance benefits for one year for 2 million people.

* Extends child tax credit, earned income tax credit, and tuition tax credit for five years.

* Extends research and experimentation tax credit, and the wind production tax credit through the end of 2013. Extends 50 percent bonus depreciation for one year.

* Avoids a cut in payments to doctors treating patients on Medicare - the so-called "doc fix."

Copyright Monopoly Trends And Predictions For 2013

2012 was, without a doubt, the most intense year to date in the fight for civil liberties and against the copyright monopoly. While much work remains to be done, we can see a light at the end of the tunnel.

While there have been nice flares of light in the past ? every success of a Pirate Party comes to mind, where all other politicians suddenly compete in who?s the better critic of the copyright monopoly ? those flares of 2009 and 2011 have still been flares of light, and not game-changing events. Not yet.

But 2012 saw two major such events, in addition to many minor ones. There was the SOPA defeat on January 18, and there was the ACTA defeat on July 4. These were slightly different in nature.

The SOPA defeat in the USA was caused by a purely grassroots effort to put pressure on the US Congress from the outside. The ACTA defeat in Europe, meanwhile, could not have succeeded without two-pronged pressure: where the SOPA battle mainly played out online and in phone calls in one-directional pressure against Congress, the ACTA battle was fought in the streets, with huge coordinated protests in 200-plus European cities.

Still, that would not have been enough if there hadn?t been people on the inside of the European Parliament to explain to other Members of Parliament why European people were protesting ? so the Pirate Party presence in the European Parliament was pivotal, being one of many ingredients not sufficient on their own, but absolutely necessary for the whole of the ultimate success in defeating ACTA.

Regardless, these events were game-changers in that politicians have learned that when the internet raises its voice and tells them in no uncertain terms to STFU & STFD, their knees tremble. They do not understand yet what it is they do not understand. They do not understand the fundamentally bad assumptions about the copyright monopoly that still shape policy (faulty assumptions like the monopoly being incentivizing creativity, or worse, being related to property rights and a component of free trade).

For as we recall, both SOPA and ACTA were practically done deals. They were seen as completely uncontroversial by the politicians and were mere formalities, until the internet spoke up.

The next step, of course, would be to learn that it isn?t ?the Internet? speaking up, but a whole generation of citizens ? voters ? that demand something as basic as their civil liberties to apply just as much online as they do offline.

For who was it that wanted ACTA and SOPA so badly? It was the copyright industry, in their long-running quest to have their business interests take legal precedence over fundamental civil liberties.

The copyright industry has long been a proponent for increased surveillance, particularly of the warrantless kind, as privacy and freedom of speech is fundamentally incompatible with enforcement of the copyright monopoly.

At the same time, the administrations around the world are cherishing the liberating aspects of the net with one voice ? but only when it happens to other countries. In their own country, it is a threat to the status quo ? meaning, to themselves.

In Sweden, for example, the administration is wasting no time in applauding the importance of the net in freeing dictatorships from oppression, all while the Swedish so-called FRA law has changed the rules of privacy from being a fundamental right to the axiom ?you are always wiretapped?, effectively negating any whistleblower protections and other freedoms of the press.

Other countries see similar patterns.

Overall, net liberty seems to consistently be near the top of the foreign policy agenda for every country, but never anywhere on the domestic policy agenda. This exact relation needs to reverse.

So what would be things to look out for in 2013?

Things should be quietening down somewhat in the European bureaucracy, as the election cycle comes to a close. Still, there are many bilateral so-called ?free trade? agreements that try to lock in monopolies at the cost of civil liberties, and these happen in just as much secrecy as ACTA did.

Speaking of monopoly agreements, the TPP ? Trans-Pacific Partnership ? should be a major cause for concern.

But if all of these are causes for concern ? and they are, as laws are still being made the wrong way ? I?m still very optimistic.

While the laws being made on net liberty and monopolies are still bad ? we have not managed as activists to cause any good things to happen, merely managed to prevent some bad things from happening ? understanding of net liberty principles are rapidly increasing, and may be hitting a tipping point.

More and more people realize, against the tenacious deceptive talking points of the copyright industry, that the copyright monopoly is not related to property rights at all but is a governmentally-sanctioned private monopoly that limits property rights and free trade.

So what do I predict for 2013?

I predict that more politicians will realize the shameless abyss of lies coming from the copyright industry, and that civil liberties should be as readily defended online as offline ? that there should be no legal or practical difference in civil liberties whether you communicate with an analog letter or a digital one.

I predict that there will be at least one game-changing event which could not have been predicted beforehand, which shifts the playing field heavily against the copyright industry and in favor of civil liberties.

I predict that the laws being made will continue to be bad, and that surveillance will continue to increase, but that more people will start to question that ? perhaps approaching, but not yet arriving at a tipping point where good policy starts being made instead.

Above all, I predict that we have much hard work still ahead of us, but that it will all be worth our while in the end.

So for 2013, remember two soundbites on making good policy:

Sharing is caring, and prosperity begins at a hundred megabit.

Happy new year!

Folks, I've been separated for nearly two months and I'm now working on self-improvement.

One area I identified that I need to work on is managing my anger.

My husband would bring out the monster in me. No, I would never throw things or hurt anyone in the process, but I'd drop a few F-bombs here and there and I'd certainly get LOUD.

Thing is, I generally don't have a temper. Most of my friends, even childhood friends, would be surprised if they were told that I have a temper. But I do.

People who know me too well and know how to push my buttons unleash that ugly side of me. My dad, my mom sometimes, and now my husband. I thought my temper problems were done with. That I was just an angry teen. That I'd overcome it. Apparently not.

Thing is, I'd been to individual counseling for an extended period of time before I got married. So I'm not sure that that's the route to go.

Does anyone recommend any self-help books or techniques to calm me down when I sense getting frustrated to the point of losing my cool?

Thanks in advance<3

Keep a record. Ask yourself at the end of each day "Did I remain centered today?" If you can answer 100% yes, mark that day a success. See for how many days you can maintain the streak, then aim to make the next streak longer.

Coffee Amore, thanks for the link.

I read it, but I also dont understand what the alternative is if you're the one being the food police for example.

My husband's weight got out of control and he continued making really unhealthy food choices even though we had discussed the need for both of us to eat better. I noticed when I stopped commenting, I got resentful as I watched him eat burgers/icecream/ oreos, because he didn't care. What's a better way of relaying frustrations, especially when it seems the other person isn't listening?

We both did this to each other, him with how I spent my money, and me, with how he ate/spent his time.

I don't have a lot of experience in this area to be honest. My husband likes to watch what he eats and he's about 10 pounds more than he was in college. I have a sibling though who could lose a lot of weight. The spouse of that sibling has tried everything from talking to getting their kids to talk about weight loss, but so far nothing has happened. The weight just seems to keep piling. You know that old saying "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink" ? Same thing applies. You can stock the house with healthy foods, model a healthy lifestyle, talk about clean eating and exercising until you're blue in the face, but you can't ever make someone who does not want to change, change. My sibling with the weight problem says it's not a bother and they're ok with it. I don't think so. I think it's just a facade, but there's nothing more any of us can do other than hope there's an epiphany or crisis (nothing too serious) that will snap them out of it.

The other thing you could do, if willing, is to draw a hard boundary. "I love you but your weight is making me lose attraction for you. If this continues..I will (insert consequence that you intend to follow through on, not just threaten)." There have been countless threads in the General Forum as well as the Men's Forum and Sex Forum on that topic alone so do a search.

Type 'Sell' into Google Finance, Get Apple's Stock Price

It turns out that when you search for the word ?sell? on Google Finance, the site redirects you to the financial page for Apple Inc. The result is no different than when you search for Apple or aapl.

Given the vicious rivalry between Apple and Google, this odd result is pretty hilarious. It could be related to user queries (though we don?t know exactly how) or it could be an easter egg put in on purpose by a Google employee. Either way, there doesn?t appear to be any malicious agenda behind the move: if you click on the blue ?More results? button, there?s a long list of other companies that have ?sell? or ?sells? in their company description.

goog finance sell 730x272 Type sell into Google Finance and youll get Apples stock price (Update: Google has fixed it)

The oddity appears to have been first discovered on Reddit but was brought to our attention by Joe of m8 Capital on Twitter:

Again, it?s unclear why this happens, and searching around for similar results has not led to anything quite as odd. The query for ?buy,? for example, leads to Best Buy, which makes sense given that the word is half the name of the company. We can?t say the same thing about ?sell? and Apple Inc.

Other queries like ?trade? and ?stock? lead to landing pages that let you pick from a list of related companies and mutual funds. Unless there?s a company with the word ?sell? in its name, we think the same should happen for this query as well.

We?re still looking at other queries, but so far it seems like ?sell? is the only one that points to where it clearly shouldn?t. The Google Finance support page doesn?t seem particularly helpful in describing how this could be happening. Whatever glitch is causing this, the fact that Google apparently wants its users to sell Apple?s stock is quite amusing.

Update at 5:00PM EST: As pointed out in the comments, typing in ?over sold? takes you to Amazon?s stock price.

We have contacted Google about this query result. We will update this article if we hear back.

Update at 8:30PM EST: ?This isn?t deliberate ? our algorithms seem to be keying off of the words ?sell? and ?sells? in the description of this very popular stock symbol,? a Google spokesperson told The Next Web. ?We?re working on how to adjust things so it doesn?t happen anymore.?

Budget battle sends mixed signals on health care

(AP) ? Confused about the federal budget struggle? So are doctors, hospital administrators and other medical professionals who serve the 100 million Americans covered by Medicare and Medicaid.

Rarely has the government sent so many conflicting signals in so short a time about the bottom line for the health care industry.

Cuts are coming, says Washington, and some could be really big. Yet more government spending is also being promised as President Barack Obama's health care overhaul advances and millions of uninsured people move closer to getting government-subsidized coverage.

"Imagine a person being told they are going to get a raise, but their taxes are also going to go up and they are going to be paying more for gas," said Thornton Kirby, president of the South Carolina Hospital Association. "They don't know if they are going to be taking home more or less. That's the uncertainty when there are so many variables in play."

Real money is at stake for big hospitals and small medical practices alike. Government at all levels pays nearly half the nation's health care tab, with federal funds accounting for most of that.

It's widely assumed that a budget deal will mean cuts for Medicare service providers. But which ones? How much? And will Medicaid and subsidies to help people get coverage under the health care law also be cut?

As House Speaker John Boehner famously said: "God only knows." The Ohio Republican was referring to the overall chances of getting a budget deal, but the same can be said of how health care ? one-sixth of the economy ? will fare.

"There is no political consensus to do anything significant," said Dan Mendelson, president of Avalere Health, a market analysis firm. "There is a collective walking away from things that matter. All the stuff on the lists of options becomes impossible, because there is no give-and-take."

As if things weren't complicated enough, doctors keep facing their own recurring fiscal cliff, separate from the bigger budget battle but embroiled in it nonetheless.

Come Jan. 1, doctors and certain other medical professionals face a 26.5 percent cut in their Medicare payments, the consequence of a 1990s deficit-reduction law gone awry. Lawmakers failed to repeal or replace that law even after it became obvious that it wasn't working. Instead, Congress usually passes a "doc fix" each year to waive the cuts.

This year, the fix got hung up in larger budget politics. Although a reprieve is expected sooner or later, doctors don't like being told to sit in the congressional waiting room.

"It seems like there is a presumption that physicians and patients can basically tolerate this kind of uncertainty while the Congress goes through whatever political machinations they are going through," said Dr. Jeremy Lazarus, president of the American Medical Association. "Our concern is that physician uncertainty and anxiety about being able to pay the bills will have an impact on taking care of patients."

A recent government survey indicates that Medicare beneficiaries are having more problems when trying to find a new primary care doctor, and Lazarus said that will only get worse.

Adding to their unease, doctors also face an additional reduction if automatic spending cuts go through. Those would be triggered if Obama and congressional leaders are unable to bridge partisan differences and strike a deal. They are part of the combination of tax increases and spending cuts dubbed the "fiscal cliff."

Medicare service providers would get hit with a 2 percent across-the-board cut, but Medicaid and subsidies for the uninsured under Obama's health care overhaul would be spared. The Medicare cut adds up to about $120 billion over ten years, with 40 percent falling on hospitals, according to Avalare's analysis. Nursing homes, Medicare Advantage plans and home health agencies also get hit.

The American Hospital Association says that would lead to the loss of hundreds of thousands of hospital jobs in a labor intensive industry that also generates employment for other businesses in local communities.

"It's very difficult to believe hospitals can absorb the kinds of numbers they are talking about without reducing service or workforce," said Kirby, the hospital association head. "You may decide that a service a hospital provides is not affordable ? for example, obstetrics in a rural community ? if you're making a little bit of money or losing a little bit of money by continuing to deliver babies in a rural community."

Independent analysts like Mendelson doubt that a 2 percent Medicare cut to hospitals would be catastrophic but say it will cost jobs somewhere.

Even if there is a budget deal, the squeeze will be on.

The administration has proposed $400 billion in health care cuts so far in the budget talks, coming mainly from Medicare spending. That's only a starting point as far as Republicans are concerned. They also want to pare back Medicaid and Obama's health care law and have also sought an increase in the eligibility age for Medicare.

Man gets DUI after driving on AA co-founder's lawn

DORSET, Vt. (AP) ? Vermont State Police say a man faces a drunken driving charge after driving onto the lawn of a historic home once owned by the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Police say 55-year-old Donald Blood III of Marlborough, Mass., was ordered to appear in court in Bennington on Jan. 14.

Police say Blood thought he was driving into a parking lot, but actually it was the lawn of the Wilson House, built in 1852 in Dorset, the birthplace of AA co-founder Bill Wilson.

The Wilson House's website describes it as a "place of sanctuary where people can come to give thanks to God for their new lives."

It still hosts several AA meetings each week.

The Need for Financial Planning for Special-Needs Kids

?

There are many types of financial worries, but probably none as relentless as the costs of treating and supporting a special needs child.

A 2008 MassMutual/Easter Seals study focusing on autism spectrum disorders (ASD),? a range of conditions that can lead to problems with socialization, communication and behavior, discovered the following:

 • Nearly three-fourths of parents are worried about their children?s financial future after they?re no longer able to care for them.
 • Only 40 percent of children with ASD had designated a guardian or created a will; only 20 percent have created a special needs trust.
 • Seventy-four percent of parents with autistic children do not have a life care plan for their children.
 • Health insurers pay for services only 39 percent of the time, leaving families with autistic children to take on more debt than parents who don?t have kids with disabilities.

?

According to a study released in December by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, an average of one in 110 children have ASD. For parents affected by these conditions or other physical, emotional or developmental disabilities in their children, financial planning should be part of the response. That?s why it?s a good idea to bring in trained expertise, including financial, legal, tax and estate help shortly after diagnosis. A financial planner is a good first step.

There are planners who specialize in special needs issues for family members of all ages. PlannerSearch, a service provided by the Financial Planning Association?, can help sort planners by expertise and location. Here are some common financial planning activities that parents of special needs kids should explore:

The retirement and estate plans should come first: Even though one or both parents undergo a massive lifestyle change to support their disabled child ? a responsibility not unlike a second career ? they can?t forget planning for retirement and healthcare needs. It?s very easy for parents to sacrifice their lifestyle needs when a child is sick or disabled, but personal planning is essential, and it should come before planning activities for the child.

This personal planning needs to go well beyond retirement savings. Parents need immediate estate planning to make sure their assets are properly disbursed for the specialized care of their minor or adult children when they die ? an event that can happen at any time. The first step of the process is making a will with specific directives for the child as well as yourself if you are incapacitated and can?t make decisions for the child. A financial planner can walk parents through this parallel process of personal financial planning and planning for the child.

Then move on to the special needs child: A child can have no more than $2,000 in total assets to qualify for federal benefits, so special planning is necessary. It?s particularly important to make sure that the child not be named a direct beneficiary of any assets that would put him over the $2,000 figure at any point in time, so it?s important that proceeds from life insurance, IRAs, annuities, 401(k) s, 403(b) s and any other inherited assets be placed in something called a Special Needs Trust.

Special Needs Trusts can be set up to accumulate, manage and disburse monies for any child with a disability. (There are also Community Trusts, which are trusts set up by nonprofit institutions that perform the same function ? see which option fits best.) The trust itself becomes the beneficiary of any inherited assets, and with very few limitations won?t affect the child?s eligibility for government benefits. Parents also need to consider whether or not to go through the guardianship/conservatorship process to take legal/financial control of their children?s lives. In the case of a minor child, generally guardianship or conservatorship will terminate when the child turns 18 or, in some states, upon marriage if the child marries before age 18. Then, obviously, parents need to decide whether a disabled child needs a trustee other protections to carry him through adulthood and beyond their deaths.

Depending on your situation, it?s a good idea to research a supplemental needs trust, which are written to provide benefits to and protect the assets of physically and mentally disabled individuals while allowing them to continue their qualifications for a variety of government-provided healthcare benefits under Medicaid.

It?s best to locate attorneys who specialize in special needs issues to write these trust agreements and coordinate with your planner and tax and estate professionals.

Don?t forget your other kids: When a disabled child becomes part of a family, parents have an added responsibility to make sure their non-disabled children aren?t ignored. That goes for financial issues as well. Because disabled children represent a significant financial burden, it?s doubly important to get planning help to make sure you can afford college and other essentials for the rest of your offspring.

Preserving Chinese Culture: The Homes of Huizhou - CKGSB ...

Bai Shiyuan, entrepreneur and intrepid collector, has made it his mission to rescue traditional Huizhou architecture from destruction

Bai Shiyuan, entrepreneur and intrepid collector, has made it his mission to rescue traditional Huizhou architecture from destruction

Bai Shiyuan and his curious collection

Enter any of the countless, brown-brick factory warehouses of Haidian district, on Beijing?s northwesterly outskirts, and you?re likely to be greeted by sweaty workers, hoards of crates and scowling overseers. Pass the threshold of entrepreneur and compulsive collector Bai Shiyuan?s warehouse, however, and you?ll walk straight into a breathtaking imperial gateway, flanked by restored wooden pillars, ornate carvings and huge gold embossed characters on every surface.

Surrounded by construction work and dilapidated pathways the monochrome building looks like any other in the area. But inside is a cavernous temple to wealth and decadence, akin to the Ming Dynasty which ruled between 1368 and 1644. Stepped gray brickwork adorned with wooden carving trim rises up to the ceiling, in the center, the Chinese-style slanted slate roofs give way to the courtyard?s trademark skylight encased in glass, the only reminder that this is a building within a building, a ship in a bottle.

Collecting is Bai?s greatest passion, and for the last 30 years, he?s obsessively hunted down and restored the merchant houses of Huizhou, assembly halls built several centuries ago by wealthy southern Chinese traders to mimic the emperor?s affluence. The soft-spoken 50-year-old businessman painstakingly moved his latest find, an old Huizhou courtyard, into his factory block-by-block and pillar-by-pillar, reconstructing the relic within a warehouse in northern Beijing.

The Huizhou Style

Huizhou?s ornate and extravagant traditional dwellings?with their southern?Chinese architectural stylings such as?upturned?eaves,?elaborate?woodcarvings?and pillars?were built in the Ming and Qing dynasties (1644?1911). The houses were constructed in the Huizhou region of Anhui province by ambitious merchants of the time who had made small fortunes trading in commodities such as bamboo, wood, lacquer, tea and salt.

The Huizhou mansions are renowned for fabulously ornate pillars, corbels and doors carved with intricate details, often incorporating local or family fables from the time.?Antique window screens from traditional Huizhou homes which have already been demolished?have, in some cases, been salvaged and sold as decorative items to luxurious restaurants, business clubs and homes in China and worldwide.

The courtyard of a Huizhou-style mansion preserved inside a glass house

Bai believes by collecting he preserves rather than disrupts Chinese cultural relics. He acquired his warehouse-bound dwelling from the Jixi area of Anhui province. ?I believe it belonged to the family of a high-ranking noble heiress and was used as a temple by the family. My priority was to preserve the building before it was torn down,? he says.

In a rush to preserve the structure from demolition, the businessman paid RMB 2 million for the 300 square meter property, and went to work on the relocation. Starting with the roof, Bai hired a team of technicians to take each slate off and wrap it carefully for transportation to Beijing. Damaged or rotten wood was replaced using the same material from the local area. Carvings were even restored by the few remaining Huizhou experts of the craft, who Bai encourages to pass on their expertise to other members of his team.

Bai is not alone in his passion for the old houses. More recently, modern day Chinese tycoons have begun to buy whole antique wooden homes in Anhui to be dismantled and rebuilt for display in villa gardens. The trend has prompted worries among conservationists that a unique form of Chinese culture is being lost forever.

The trend prompted Chen?Rongjun,?director?of?Dongyang?Relic?Protection?Office, in Anhui province,?to tell local media that while?the houses?are not listed as protected buildings, they lose their unique cultural value once removed from their original sites.?His concerns focused on wealthy businessmen in Yiwu, a wealthy city in Zhejiang province, who had developed a penchant for buying up the old homes from Anhui and reestablishing them in their home city.

But not all collectors are cashed up businessmen looking for a new garden ornament. There are some in the Yiwu area, who share Bai?s vision of preserving the antique structures for future generations. Yang?Handong, a?textile?tycoon?in?Yiwu, has?turned?his collection of antique Huizhou-style antique houses into?a?public?exhibition. Yiwu locals can view seven exquisitely restored structures in a park next to the headquarters of Yang?s Hujiang?Group,?China?s?biggest?thread?producer. Likewise, Zhu?Youfu,?a?retired?local?official in the city, has?created a?dining and tourist complex around his collection of Anhui houses, with guests paying to feast in some of the restored buildings.

Bai won?t confirm if he?ll invest his own funds in a similar open-doors museum for the public appreciation of a unique form of Chinese cultural heritage. For now, it appears, Bai?s exquisite Huizhou homes are for private viewing only.

Long Time Collector

Since the 1980s, Bai has bought around 200 similarly exquisite decorated courtyards. When he first purchased one of the properties, at around 300 square meters, it cost him between RMB 7,000 and RMB 8,000, he recalls. In the 1990s, just before he stopped buying the houses, his last property cost RMB 7 million. By this time an awareness of cultural heritage had driven the prices so high that he had to stop.

?The living standards and education of people in the Huizhou area was on the rise,? said Bai. ?Their understanding about the nature of cultural heritage and relics had increased, and while they were still looking to move, the price of the buildings had increased.?

The traditional houses are now Bai?s proudest possessions and have a history of decadence. In imitation of the imperial style, the merchants became lavish in the design of their own homes, temples and assembly halls, utilizing the unique talents and materials of the local area for stonecutting, wood carving and brickwork. It was this excessive attention to quality and decoration that first attracted Bai, who still believes that the Huizhou houses are the very best in Chinese civil architecture. Originally, he had begun collecting inspired by the Ming Dynasty paintings which appreciated rapidly in value, but later found himself driven by a desire to preserve China?s cultural heritage.

The buildings had just about weathered the test of time, and somehow managed to survive China?s Cultural Revolution. By the 1980s however, the original occupants of the old buildings were keen to move into more modern buildings with better amenities and had been tearing down the structures in favor of China?s passion for faceless apartment complexes. Bai, struck by the beauty of the buildings, and well aware of the potential value of collectibles, rescued them.

?I actually didn?t start this with the idea of cultural heritage preservation in mind,? he remarks. ?My collection of art has undergone three phases. Firstly as an investment for my future, then collecting, organizing and appreciating, but finally I realized that we were taking these things out of society?s grasp. They are still precious to society, and it?s about giving them back for people to appreciate them as well.?

In future, he hopes, there will be 10 Huizhou-style villages around the world, reconstructed as they were as a testament to and an avenue for spreading Chinese culture. With no concrete plans yet, Bai hopes to start in China, but is waiting for the right time to contact the Chinese government to approve a property or piece of land for his planned museum, before he moves further afield.

His true vision is to recreate entire villages in the same state that he found them in various locations around the world, as a place for tourists or locals to appreciate Chinese culture and learn about China?s history. Meanwhile, the relics are sitting in a 100 acre warehouse on land belonging to Bai in Beijing, waiting for their rebirth.

The urge to preserve China?s ancient culture now appears to drive Bai as much as the thrill of collecting. ?I think this can only happen in China,? he says, referring to the Cultural Revolution. Between 1966 and 1977, the Red Guard, a militant youth group established by Chairman Mao Zedong, was encouraged to root out bourgeoisie elements within society. Artworks associated with imperial China were targeted and destroyed across the country and many artists were subject to public criticism or at worst, torture.

?At that time, families who owned great calligraphy and paintings didn?t even burn them, in case it attracted the attention of informers or the authorities. Instead, they would submerse them in water until they just turned to pulp. So many great works were lost,? he says sadly.

Appreciating in Value

Bai?s hobby for collecting old works of art soon became his main occupation, and he has now accumulated not only a healthy collection of ancient courtyards, but also stacks of carefully archived boxes, kept in an air-conditioned storeroom, each of which contains pieces of Chinese calligraphy by different artists along with ink wash paintings, sculptures and historical relics.

Bai says that his wife and four-year-old son have given their somewhat tacit approval of his compulsive collecting, making space in the family apartment in Yayuncun, near Beijing?s Olympic stadiums, for Huizhou carvings and other relics.

Pointing to a Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) bed, he casually mentions that it?s worth somewhere in the region of RMB 30 million, a scroll that was once in the care of the Manchu Emperor Qianlong (1711-1799), is thought to be priceless. Paintings hanging on the walls of his warehouse by younger contemporary artists, still working in traditional styles, are valued in the thousands. He insists he is not collecting with a view to profit, but rather out of his own desire to possess elegant things.

Bai spends much of his time with promising traditionalist artists, collecting their work before it appreciates in value. ?Chinese collectors who go to the auctions don?t buy a collection; they focus solely on a single expensive piece. I?m not like that at all,? says Bai. ?I never compete in the auctions. I always collect things that other people overlook. I?m looking for things that will appreciate in value over the next 20 years.?

Certainly China?s fine arts market doesn?t want for eager buyers. The European Fine Art Foundation (TEFAF), based in Maastricht, the Netherlands, has calculated that China now accounts for 30% of the world?s arts and antique sales, surpassing more stagnant markets in the UK and US, which now account for 22% (unchanged) and 29% (down five percentage points from last year) respectively. The country?s fine arts market was estimated at $3 billion in 2010 according to the TEFAF.

Wealthy Chinese buyers have turned the global arts market on its head, with former top sellers like Spanish artist Pablo Picasso and American pop-culture icon Andy Warhol being eclipsed by Zhang Daqian and Qi Baishi, both Chinese traditionalist painters born in the late 19th century.

Chinese collectors have opted for local artifacts. A single scroll by ancient calligrapher Huang Tingjian sold for RMB 436 million on June 23, 2010, at Beijing?s Poly auction house, smashing the previous record of RMB 169 million held by Handscroll of the Eighteen Arhats by Wu Bin from the year before, according to a press release from the auction house.

In for the Long Haul

As a lowly radio mechanic in Beijing in the late 1970s, a young Bai bought three vases from a street side antiques market for RMB 15, two months-worth of wages at the time. Raised in an educated family, Bai could see that the vases were of some value, but it was only when he sold two of them to pay outstanding debts in the late 1990s for RMB 1 million, that he realized what he had on his hands. Eleven years later, he sold the remaining vase for nearly RMB 20 million.

?My businesses have never done very well,? he chuckles. ?I?ve always spent all my money on collecting, I had hoped to gather as much of value as I possibly could by the time I was 50. Afterwards I can stand back and work on other things.?

Despite accumulating an Aladdin?s Cave in a grubby Beijing suburb, Bai says he has no intention of selling it all off for a quick buck. Participating in the Olympic Fine Arts project ? an event established alongside the Beijing 2008 Olympics to promote culture with sports ? Bai took a series of paintings and scrolls to London this year, to show off Chinese antiques to a wider audience. While keeping his Huizhou dreams alive, he?s waiting for government support to allow him to share the structures with the public. In the meantime, he?s doing what he does best ? watching, waiting and collecting.

Astronauts celebrate Christmas on space station

Christmas in orbit might not look exactly like the holidays on Earth, but the astronauts living on the International Space Station this holiday season try to make the orbiting science laboratory as homey as possible.

The six members of the station's Expedition 34 crew, three of whom just arrived last week, are spending Christmas and New Years Day aboard the spacecraft, but that doesn't mean they don't get to celebrate. Hundreds of miles above the Earth's surface, the spaceflyers eat, exchange gifts, and try to be merry during Christmas and when welcoming in the New Year. ?

The space station crew are off duty for both Christmas Eve and Christmas. That means that they don't need to work on any of the 110 experiments aboard the station, and they can take as much time for meals as they want, NASA spokeswoman Nicole Cloutier-Lamasters told SPACE.com.

The space station residents have a few different decorating options available to them. An earlier expedition left the crewmembers a Christmas tree and stockings made from nomex, a flame resistant fiber that's safe to stow onboard. [Holidays in Space: Astronaut Photo Album]

The week before Christmas was an eventful one for the orbital crew as well. Canadian Space Agency astronaut Chris Hadfield, NASA astronaut Tom Marshburn, and Russian cosmonaut Roman Romanenko arrived on Friday (Dec. 21), joining Kevin Ford of NASA, and cosmonauts Oleg Novitskiy and Evgeny Tarelkin to fill out the $100 billion science laboratory to its usual 6-person capacity.

The spaceflyers also have presents. The Progress 48 cargo freighter ? a robotic Russian supply ship that launched in early August of this year ? carried more than just basic supplies to the ISS. The Progress also brought holiday presents for the spaceflyers who'd be spending Yuletide in space.

As well as a traditional meal complete with turkey and candied yams, the crewmembers also get the chance to video conference with their families. This is a particular treat because video chatting is usually possible only once a week, and involves a lot of planning for mission control and the spaceflyers.

Despite NASA's best efforts to make the holidays in space as warm as they are on Earth, that doesn't mean astronauts won't get homesick.

Marshburn, for example, has a 10-year-old daughter.

"That'll be tough, thinking about her waking up in the morning, enjoying things," said Marshburn during a preflight interview with NASA, "but the fact is we've got some technology that'll allow me, hopefully through an internet or I guess an internet protocol session, to be able to join in with them and see their faces and they can see me. It'll be a little tough for me, as it would be for anybody, but I think the price is certainly well worth it, to be up there."

Hadfield celebrated the holidays with his family before leaving for this, his second visit to the space station. Most of his family is spread around the world, Hadfield said during another preflight interview with NASA, so they celebrated the season early by flying to Kazakhstan to spend time with each other before his liftoff from the Baikonur Cosmodrome there. Hadfield is also an avid musician and guitar player, so music ? and a guitar that lives on the station ? is likely a part of the Christmas celebration, Cloutier-Lamasters said.?

For his part, Romanenko said the prospect of a space Christmas is exciting.

"I think it will be a big adventure, a big moment in our space life," Romanenko said in a NASA preflight interview. "And we'll be dressing up, we'll be decorating the station, we'll put up a Christmas tree, maybe we'll have some presents that will arrive on the cargo vehicles, which of course will make us very happy and will support us during this evening, this special time."

Available Online Education Options ? EDUCATION TIPS ...

The information inside a library has to be correctly managed and maintained so individuals can use it. Students can step into careers as librarians after completing the appropriate training. Available online education options for library science can provide students with the chance to gain undergraduate and graduate degree training in library science.

Online education can be gained at the undergraduate study. However, for students that want to become librarians an associate?s or bachelor?s degree program will only act as a prerequisite to the required graduate training. To enter a master?s degree program in library science students need to have a bachelor?s degree. Students have two educational options to choose from when preparing for a master?s degree in library science.

Online training at the associate?s degree level provides students with the knowledge to enter assistant positions inside a library. Students work through two-year programs that develop their knowledge of how libraries are ran and what tasks are to be completed by assistants. The daily operations are broken down to teach students how to correctly maintain the circulation desk, carry out reference research, and appropriately use library equipment. Coursework is designed to prepare students to understand how to manage and categorize information. Depending on the program, students may be able to study specific areas such as library technology or children?s services. Further education at the bachelor?s degree level deepens students? knowledge of the field.

Students that complete an online bachelor?s degree program gain an in depth education that can be applied to careers or graduate training. The modern library is broken down so students can understand how to correctly organize the media inside several different types of libraries. Library administration as a whole is learned and students are able to focus the rest of their courses on a particular area. For example, students that are interested in museum work can tailor their education to learning how to manage that type of information. Other possible areas include corporate, medical, school, and military libraries. Resource management, classification, media selection, and database usage courses are some subjects that will prepare students for the field. Students that don?t continue education can become technicians and associate librarians.

Masters degree programs allow students to study information technology along with the entire field of library science. Students are able to correctly manage all information located in a library. Electronic and print materials are explored using the Dewey decimal system and the Library of Congress classification system. Specific courses break down the roles that librarians fulfill such as obtaining new materials and archiving materials for later use. Online programs typically have students choose a concentration and complete specific coursework related to that area. This is important because students learn how to catalog information for their concentration. Some possible areas of concentration include:

For each area students learn about source referencing, cataloguing, accessing information, and collection development. Education allows students to step into several careers, which may include becoming school, reference, media, and archival librarians.

Oil prices lower in quiet holiday trading

(AP) ? The price of oil fell slightly Monday during a quiet day at the world's energy markets.

Concerns over the political stalemate in Washington continue to be the focus of traders, with the price of U.S. benchmark oil down 24 cents to $88.42 a barrel in early trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

"With politicians out on recess, sovereign credit markets closed and a general lack of vigor in seasonal markets, there's not much to chew on today with crude oil prices edging lower in decidedly thin volume," said a report from Sucden Financial Research in London.

The average U.S. price for gasoline rose 1.5 cents over the weekend to $3.247 a gallon. The price is nearly two cents higher than a year ago.

In other energy futures trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

? Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, was down 59 cents to $108.38 a barrel.

? Natural gas was down 8 cents to $3.37 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil was down 2 cents to $2.99 a gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline was unchanged at $2.72 a gallon.

Two New York firefighters shot dead at scene of fire

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Two upstate New York volunteer firefighters were shot and killed and three others were wounded on Monday at the scene of an early morning house fire in a suburb of Rochester, authorities said.

The two firefighters were shot by a gunman - who was later found dead - as they responded to the scene of several house fires in Webster, New York, according to a spokeswoman for New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

Another two firefighters were injured in the shooting and were rushed to Strong Memorial Hospital, where they remained in "guarded" condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman. A third victim, an off-duty police officer, was hit by stray gunfire as he was driving by the scene.

A body believed to be that of the shooter was later found by police outside one of the homes where the fire began. The assailant was killed by gunfire, though it was not immediately clear if the wounds were self-inflicted, authorities said.

The fire burned throughout the morning as police secured the area as a crime scene and evacuated area residents.

The dead volunteer firefighters were identified as Lt. Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka, according to Michelle Hook, the attorney general's spokeswoman.

The injured firefighters were identified as Joseph Hofsetter and Theodore Scardino, and the off-duty police officer was identified as John Ritter.

Dozens of Android Games, Apps Discounted for Google Holiday Sale

The Google Play store -- that's the name of the Android "app store," or the "Android Market" for those of you new to the change -- is featuring dozens of game and app sales for Android smartphones and tablets. Well, actually, it's not; you can see some of the discounted apps on the front page, but there's no special section of the website or on-device market that says where the ones on sale are, or even how to find them. And the "Holiday Surprise" feature is only a handful of deals picked by Google itself.

Here's a look at some of the major game publishers' Android sales, along with discounted creativity apps and where to find more details.

Gameloft's "Android Christmas" sale

It may be too late for Hanukkah this year, but top-tier Android publisher Gameloft has put a dozen of its titles up for sale for Christmas just $0.99 . These games are normally in the $5-7 range, making them among Android's priciest.

Besides its licensed games based on movies -- like superhero films "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Amazing Spider-Man," and (inexplicably) "The Adventures of Tintin" -- Gameloft is best known for creating mobile versions of popular PC and console games. Not in the sense that they are official ports, so much as that they're remarkably similar, to the extent that they arguably could be official ports if the serial numbers were filed off. With that in mind, several of its Modern Combat (which are totally not Modern Warfare) and N.O.V.A. first-person shooters (which are totally not Halo) are included in the sale, although the most recent installment of the former -- Modern Combat 4 -- is not.

Superhero fans may also want to check out Marvel Games' Avengers Initiative, which isn't a Gameloft title but is also on sale for $0.99 .

Square-Enix's "Winter of Mobile" sale

Best known for having invented the jRPG genre, Square-Enix has brought several of its most popular titles to Android, and most of them are discounted (from their extremely high launch prices) for the holidays.

Crystal Defender, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy have all received numerous 1-star reviews on Google Play for technical issues, and reviewers complain that the titles haven't been optimized for Android hardware. The Chaos Rings titles, however, fare much better with reviewers, and are much more steeply discounted as well, at $3.99 each compared to their usual price of $12.99. They're ports of the iOS originals, which were Square-Enix's first attempts at making "real" jRPGs for mobile devices.

SEGA's Holiday Sale

SEGA's games are on sale for the holidays across the board, on pretty much every platform. On Android, that mostly amounts to Sonic 4 (episodes 1 and 2) and Sonic CD, all of which are on sale for $0.99 . Strategy title Total War Battles and rollerblade platformer Jet Set Radio, meanwhile, are on sale for $1.99.

Creativity / productivity apps on sale

Android phones and tablets aren't just for gaming. If you didn't pick up Microsoft Office-compatible OfficeSuite Pro 6+ during Google's earlier $0.25 sale, it's discounted to $0.99 now from its regular price of $14.99. Autodesk's professional drawing apps, SketchBook Mobile and SketchBook Pro for Tablets, are $0.99 and $2.99 compared to $1.99 and $4.99 regularly, and the Jotter handwriting app -- which requires a Samsung Galaxy Note -- is half-off at $1.99.

Stay up to date

Many more Android games and apps are being discounted for the holidays. Apps such as (the aptly-named) AppSales can help keep you apprised of the latest additions. Meanwhile, the Android Police blog is maintaining an up-to-date "Enormous List" of all holiday sales.
