Saturday, March 30, students and community members ran in the third annual IRONDOG 5K Run/Walk through campus to raise money for the IRONDOG fund. More than 750 people attended the event.

Last summer, fourth-year veterinary medicine student Eric Naplin faced overwhelming medical bills when his dog Seppe, an energetic and friendly Weimaraner, was confronted with major health issues. IRONDOG was there to step in and help Naplin pay for the care ? possibly saving Seppe?s life.

On Saturday, Naplin, along with more than 750 students and community members, ran through campus in the third-annual IRONDOG 5K Run/Walk to raise money to help animals such as Seppe. IRONDOG was started in 2010 to help animal owners who cannot afford medical treatments.

?IRONDOG helped let us do treatments I might not have been able to (pay for),? Naplin said. ?IRONDOG just helps a lot of dogs get the care they need when funds (aren?t there).?

Matthew Beal, an associate professor in emergency and critical care in the College of Veterinary Medicine and co-founder of IRONDOG, said participation increased this year, after more than 500 ran last year. He said there are now other chapters of IRONDOG nationwide, including North Carolina State University.

?Companion animals in general are a part of the family now,? Beal said. ?A strong bond that people have with their animals, and couple that with the economy, I think IRONDOG can (help).?

Peanut, a dog recently helped by the charity, attended the run with his owners after being treated by MSU?s veterinarians.

He was brought to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital because he was suffering from a flesh-eating disease. If Peanut?s owners had waited 12 more hours to bring him in, he might not have survived, said Bryden Stanley, surgeon at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Stanley was the lead surgeon on Peanut?s uncommon case. She said Peanut has had four good things going for him ? a fantastic nature and ability to heal, dedicated owners, MSU?s veterinarians and IRONDOG.

Stanley said Peanut?s care, including two major surgeries so far, cost about $10,000, with more surgery to go.

?(It) would be awful if the owners couldn?t afford (the care),? Stanley said. ?The thing about IRONDOG is that everybody contributes. It?s just such a good community thing.?

First-year veterinary medicine student Paige Schwartz brought her family and boyfriend, criminal justice senior Mike Fowler, to the race. Schwartz and Fowler made a competition out of the race to support the IRONDOG fund.

?I think this is a great cause,? Schwartz said. ?I?m more excited (my family is) all here.?
