Inauguration 2013: How Obama is different from four years ago

Inauguration 2013 is different from the 2009 version in many ways ? not least the president himself. He's learned some tough political lessons, but he still seems to have ambitious plans.

The shadow of President Obama is cast on a wall as he leaves a news conference in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington after the Senate Finance Committee voted to approve his health-care bill in this file photo. Obama will look ot expand his legacy in his second term.

Four years ago, on the eve of his first inauguration, President-elect Barack Obama faced enormous challenges and sky-high expectations.

The economy was on the verge of collapse, and the nation was embroiled in two wars. But Americans were infused with optimism that the young senator from Illinois, about to make history as the nation?s first black president, would deliver on his promise of transformational, post-partisan leadership.

Mr. Obama took office with a Gallup job approval rating in the stratosphere, near 70 percent. Now he embarks on his second term with the public stature of a mere mortal ? job approvals averaging in the low 50s, up from first-term lows that had dipped below 40 percent ? and even starker polarization.

?Hope and change? have given way to cold-eyed realism. Obama?s big Democratic majorities in Congress ? the one-party rule that allowed him to pass the biggest stimulus bill in history, auto and financial industry bailouts, and sweeping health-care reform ? are long gone, in part precisely because of all those big measures.

But as circumstances have changed, so too has Obama. Having entered office without much executive experience, he has learned by doing. Initially, his impulse was to throw out broad concepts and let his Democratic allies in Congress fill in the legislative details. After the mid-term shellacking, and the tea-party fueled Republican takeover of the House, the next two years were marked by gridlock and brinkmanship ? and an ugly reelection campaign.

Now Obama is playing a different game.

?He?s had a steep learning curve, but I think he?s learned a bit about how to negotiate,? says James Thurber, ?director of the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University. ?He?s tougher now.?

Instead of trying to make nice with congressional Republicans, his team has made clear, Obama will work the opposition from the outside, traveling out into the country more and playing to public opinion. His tech-savvy campaign operation, Obama for America, has morphed into Organizing for Action, an effort to turn his millions of supporters into a digital army that ?will work to turn our shared values into legislative action,? as Obama wrote in an e-mail to supporters. ?

After the frustrations of trying to negotiate with House Speaker John Boehner (R), Obama now seems set to use the bully pulpit to exploit congressional Republicans? extraordinarily low public approval. Already, the House Republicans? decision Friday not to extract concessions in exchange for raising the debt ceiling for three months represents a bow to public opinion.

But there are two more ?fiscal cliffs? to come on which Obama is in a weaker position ? the late February deadline for deep spending cuts known as the ?sequester? and the end of federal spending authority on March 27. Obama also faces longstanding pressure to put entitlement cuts on the table.

The Republican game may be to tie Obama down, as the Lilliputians did to Gulliver, with all the fiscal cliffs. But Obama is still dreaming big. Many agenda items remain from the first term, including immigration reform, climate change, and energy.

?We want our children to live in an America that isn?t burdened by debt, that isn?t weakened by inequality, that isn?t threatened by the destructive power of a warming planet,? he said after his Nov. 6 election victory.

BOSTON (AP) ? Patrice Bergeron showed why he's more than just an offensive forward.

Bergeron helped kill off a large portion of short-handed time in overtime before he finished off his day with a goal in the shootout, leading the Boston Bruins to a 2-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday afternoon.

Tyler Seguin scored the other shootout goal and Brad Marchand had the regulation goal for the Bruins (2-0).

Boston was short-handed for 2 minutes, 17 seconds of overtime after playing the final 71 seconds of regulation short-handed.

Bergeron felt like the solid penalty killing was a simply a matter of keeping things easy.

"We've stuck to our system," he said. "I guess we've kept it simple."

Tuukka Rask made 26 saves in regulation and held the Jets to only Blake Wheeler's score in the shootout. Bryan Little, the last shooter, hit the right post to end the game.

Ondrej Pavelec made 26 saves in regulation for the Jets, but gave up scores to Boston's first two shooters in the extra session. Chris Thorburn scored for the Jets (0-2).

Seguin moved in, shifted a few times before beating Pavelec with a forehand shot to the glove side. Bergeron, the second shooter, slipped one between the goalie's pads.

The Jets played the final 1:11 of regulation and opening 49 seconds of OT on a power play when Johnny Boychuk high-sticked Little. Olli Jokinen's tip-in bid slid just wide of an open side of the net in the closing seconds.

Winnipeg also had a power play for the final 1:28 of overtime when Zdeno Chara was called for holding Wheeler, but it failed to get a decent shot on net despite being set up in Boston's end for a good portion of time.

"I think we were playing aggressive right off the bat," Bergeron said. "We didn't give them time to set up the plays they wanted because we were so aggressive."

Boston coach Claude Julien felt his team's penalty killing unit led to the win.

"That's what made the difference," he said. "I thought our PK was good. (Bergeron) and (Chris Kelly) were breaking up plays when they got over the blue line."

Winnipeg was 0 for 4 on the power play.

"It's disappointing when you get those opportunities in the end there," Jets forward Evander Kane said. "Myself, I can't be making those bad passes and not generating anything. That's something that we're going to have to get better at."

The Bruins had a power play late in regulation when Kane was whistled for goaltender interference. Rich Peverley clanged a slap shot from the left point off the right post seconds after the ensuing faceoff. Nathan Horton had a bid in close, but Pavelec dropped to make a chest save.

Early in the third, Winnipeg's Paul Postma hit the post to Rask's right. Seconds later, the netminder, moving across the crease, made a glove save on Thorburn.

In a contest that lacked the emotion and fan enthusiasm of Boston's opening 3-1 win over the New York Rangers on Saturday, both teams seemed lackluster for long stretches in the first and second periods.

Coming of a 4-1 loss at home against Ottawa in their season opener, the Jets scored their first even strength goal of the season when Thorburn scored off the rebound of Postma's shot from the point 1:58 into the game. The assist was Postma's first NHL point.

Boston tied it 1-all when Seguin stole Jokinen's clearing pass near Winnipeg's blue line, broke in on the right wing and fed a streaking Marchand. who redirected the puck past Pavelec from the low slot with just under 6 minutes left in the opening period.

The Bruins had a few excellent scoring chances late in the second. Defenseman Aaron Johnson hit the post with just over 4 minutes to play. The Bruins best opportunity came when Seguin collected the rebound of Bergeron's shot in the front of the net, shifted to his right and missed an open net with a little over 2 minutes to play.

The Jets, who had a pair of power play chances in the second, nearly regained the lead early in the second, but Jokinen hit the side of an open net while skating on a man advantage.

Rask made a glove save of Kyle Wellwood on a clean breakaway midway into the opening period.

NOTES: Bruins D Dennis Seidenberg missed the game with an undisclosed lower body injury. Julien said after the game that he could be back on the ice tomorrow. ... It was the first of three games between the teams this season, but the only one at TD Garden. ... The teams split their four meetings last season. ... Olympic Gold Medalist Aly Raisman dropped the ceremonial first puck. ... Boston D Boychuk played his 200th career game. ... Winnipeg is in Washington, D.C against the Capitals Tuesday. ... Boston is off until Wednesday night's rematch against the New York Rangers.

Girl, 5, suspended for pink bubble gun threat

By Karen Araiza , NBCPhiladelphia.com

A 5-year-old girl who allegedly said she was going to shoot her classmates and herself with her pink "bubble" gun was kicked out of school.

Last week, the kindergartner was chatting in line while she was waiting for the bus. No one is sure exactly what she said, but according to the family's attorney, she told classmates something along the lines of "I'm going to shoot you and I will shoot myself." She didn't have her Hello Kitty Bubble Gun with her at the time, but when school officials got wind of the conversation, they questioned the little girl, suspended her for making a "terroristic threat,"?according to The Daily Item newspaper, and told her parents she needed to be evaluated by a psychiatrist.

"All I know," the mother told the paper, "is what my daughter has told me and she said she was told she could go to jail, which is a very traumatic thing for a 5-year-old to live with."

The attorney says the little girl was questioned for about three hours, without her parents present.

"This is a good-natured little girl," lawyer Robin Ficker said. "And this shows how hysterical people who work at schools have become since Sandy Hook."

She attends school in the Mount Carmel Area School District in Northumberland County, Pa. A school administrator told?PennLive.com?that officials are looking into the incident and are not able to discuss disciplinary actions.

The family wants the school to apologize to their daughter and they don't want the suspension to be on her school record.

Te'o provides answers, but more may be asked

NEW YORK (AP) ? Manti Te'o tried to put one of the strangest sports stories in memory behind him, insisting he was the target of an elaborate online hoax in which he fell for a fake woman created by pranksters, then admitting his own lies made the bizarre ordeal worse.

Whether his off-camera interview with ESPN was enough to demonstrate that the Notre Dame star linebacker was a victim in the scheme instead of a participant is still an open question.

The most important judges of the All-American and Heisman Trophy finalist may be pro football teams. Te'o has finished his coursework at Notre Dame and is preparing for the NFL draft at an elite training facility in Florida, where the 2?-hour interview was conducted late Friday night.

ESPN reporter Jeremy Schaap said that the 21-year-old Te'o answered all his questions in a calm voice, and tried to clear up the mysteries and inconsistencies of the case.

Among the highlights:

? Te'o denied being in on the hoax. "No. Never," he said. "I wasn't faking it. I wasn't part of this."

? Te'o provided a timeline and details of his relationship with Lennay Kekua, his virtual sweetheart, who went through an array of medical calamities before "dying" of Leukemia in September, just hours after Te'o got real news of his grandmother's death.

? He acknowledged that he lied to his father about meeting Kekua in person, then exacerbated the situation after her supposed death when he "tailored" his comments to reporters to make it sound as if their relationship was more than just phone calls and electronic messages.

"I even knew, that it was crazy that I was with somebody that I didn't meet, and that alone ? people find out that this girl who died, I was so invested in, I didn't meet her, as well," Te'o said. "So I kind of tailored my stories to have people think that, yeah, he met her before she passed away, so that people wouldn't think that I was some crazy dude."

In the same part of the conversation, Te'o said: "Out of this whole thing, that is my biggest regret. And that is the biggest, I think, that's from my point of view, that is a mistake I made."

? He detailed the confusing phone conversation he had on Dec. 6, when the woman who was posing as Kekua contacted him and told him one last hard-to-believe story about how she had to fake her own death to evade drug dealers. Te'o said it left him piecing together what exactly was going on over the next few days, when he was bouncing from interview to interview while taking part in the Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York on Dec. 8 and another awards dinner in Los Angeles the next night. He mentioned his girlfriend in interviews at least three times over that period.

? Even after he went to his parents, coaches and Notre Dame officials with the story by Dec. 26, and the school provided an investigation that it says corroborated Te'o's version by Jan. 4, the player told ESPN that it was not until Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, a 22-year-old acquaintance who lives in California, contacted him Wednesday and confessed to the prank, that he finally believed Kekua was not real. Schaap said that Te'o showed him direct messages from Twitter in which Tuiasosopo admitted to masterminding the hoax and apologized.

Schaap remarked to Te'o earlier in the interview that he still talked about Lennay as if she existed.

"Well, in my mind I still don't have answers," Te'o replied. "I'm still wondering what's going on, what happened."

Tuiasosopo has not spoken publicly since Deadspin.com broke the news of the hoax on Wednesday and identified him as being heavily involved

At the Tuiasosopo house in Palmdale, Calif., the family did not answer the door Saturday. Cars remained parked outside and members of the media trickled in and out all afternoon, as a small pile of business cards and letters sat untouched on the front stoop of the two-story home.

Whether Tuiasosopo ultimately confirms Te'o's version of the story will go a long way toward determining where this saga is headed.

In the interview with ESPN, Te'o implied that he was not holding a grudge against Tuiasosopo.

"I hope he learns," Te'o said. "I hope he understands what he's done. I don't wish an ill thing to somebody. I just hope he learns. I think embarrassment is big enough."

Te'o was the emotional leader and best player on a Notre Dame team that went from unranked to playing for the program's first national championship since 1988. And Te'o's tale of inspired play while dealing with a double-dose of tragedy became the theme of the Irish's unexpected rise and undefeated regular season.

Not until Te'o and the Irish faced Alabama in the BCS championship did the good times end. The Crimson Tide won in a 42-14 rout on Jan. 7, the hoax was then exposed and suddenly the dream season was tarnished.

So far no law enforcement agencies have indicated they are pursuing a criminal case in the scam, and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick in a news conference earlier this week said the university was going to leave it up to Te'o and his family to pursue legal action.

Bennett Kelly, founder of the Internet Law Center in Santa Monica, Calif., said a criminal case of fraud against the perpetrators probably wouldn't work because it appears they took nothing of value (money or other items) from Te'o. The player said at one point the fake girlfriend asked for his checking account number but he declined.

A civil suit would be difficult as well, Kelley said.

"It's not as easy as it's often portrayed," Kelley said. "The context has to be outrageous. There usually has to be some kind of physical manifestation. It can't just be that it was a bummer."

Swarbrick said from the start that it didn't seem as if laws were broken or NCAA rules violated. He had publicly encouraged Te'o to give his side of the story.

"Manti put this to rest for me and the University long ago," Swarbrick said in a text message to the AP on Saturday. "I am just glad that everyone (at least everyone open to the facts) now knows what we have long known ? that a great young man was the innocent victim of a very cruel hoax."

While fans and the members of the media might not be satisfied with where Te'o has left it, he won't necessarily be compelled to answer to them ? just to potential employers starting in February.

At the NFL combine, Te'o will have his physical skills and fitness tested, and he will be interviewed by NFL executives and coaches. He has been projected as a potential first-round draft pick. If his involvement in this hoax sets off red flags for teams and it causes him to slip in April's draft, it could cost him millions of dollars.

Said former Dallas Cowboys general manager and NFL draft consultant Gil Brandt: "Between now and 97 days from now when the draft comes, there'll be a lot of people investigating just what took place."
