Capitalism and North Korea?s leaders

With North Korean leader Kim Jong-un having just overseen his nation?s third nuclear weapons test, The Economist magazine?s Feb. 9 cover story takes a very timely look at how ?capitalism is seeping through the bamboo curtain? with consequences the despotic Mr. Kim may not be able to control.

The North Korean famine of the 1990s, which killed up to 1 million people, triggered a breakdown in the government?s control over food distribution. So individual entrepreneurs began selling food grown in family plots. That market impulse has grown. ?It has become clear that other merchants today operate on a far more ambitious scale, exporting raw materials to China and bringing back consumer goods,? the Economist reports. So, the magazine says, money talks in today?s North Korea in ways that have a variety of destabilizing consequences.

For example, traders bring in computers, radios, and mobile phones, which diminish the Kim regime?s control of information. That allows some North Koreans to have a more acute sense of how impoverished their lives are compared with those of citizens of neighboring South Korea.

The role of the sexes has changed as women, who run some black markets, have become the breadwinners in their families. And there is a widening gap between the lives of market-involved elites centered in Pyongyang and the lives of the chronically underfed rest of the country.

Who are the millionaires?

The debate over how to reform the US tax code will be one of the top political stories of 2013. Whether America?s richest individuals are paying their fair share will be a key aspect of the debate. So it is useful to get a clearer picture of the financially fortunate.

?[T]he common conception of millionaires, on whom so much of the nation?s long-term fiscal viability depends, is largely a caricature,? writes Graeme Wood in the conservative National Review.

The first step in understanding millionaires, Mr. Wood writes, is a matter of definition. One group of millionaires are those who have assets like homes, savings accounts, and pensions that are worth a million dollars. ?The majority are working people,? Wood writes, and some 5.26 million households meet that definition.
The second group of millionaires consists of those who earn a million dollars or more a year. This much more rarefied group includes fewer than half a million households a year. Wood notes that many in this group are ?lucky one-timers,? folks who won the lottery or inherited from wealthy parents.

Only the 200,000 households with $20 million or more in assets have ?the financial equivalent of a perpetual-motion machine, capable of spontaneously replenishing itself and fairly reliably producing large amounts of money for its fortunate owner,? Wood says.

The window washers? life at the top

The New Yorker provides a vicarious glimpse into the dangerous, silent, and exhilarating world of skyscraper window washers for readers whose own jobs may offer less excitement.

The advent of computer design software made it practical for architects to create buildings with a different window configuration on every floor, ?turning Manhattan into a crystal garden of geometric forms and irregular shapes,? writes Adam Higginbotham. At the same time, the work of men with buckets and squeegees has remained just outside the reach of automation.

Thus it is that window washers still have to step out onto an 18-inch-wide walkway outside the 103rd floor of the Empire State Building.
When Mr. Higginbotham joined a window washer there, briefly, he writes, ?I sank to my knees in what may have resembled an attitude of pure terror.?

Photosphere Installer: An easy way to flash Photosphere on rooted devices

Yes, that's my LG Optimus Black, and yes, it is running Photosphere. It's the same Photosphere that distant relation the Nexus 4 is running too, not the LG version found on the Optimus G Pro. Where there's a will, there's usually a way in Android, and Photosphere is one of the headline new features in Android 4.2. We love it, as I'm sure many others do, and thanks to an app available in Google Play, rooted users can have it without any more effort than downloading and opening any other Android app.

Root access with Busybox and Android 4.1 are the only requirements. Since CM10 counts as Android 4.1, anyone running this or other Jelly Bean based custom ROM's should be fine. Upon opening the installer app for the first time, you're presented with the two steps to installation -- downloading the files and then installing them. That simple. A nice touch though is the ability to backup/restore a camera, and you can tell the app to either keep or remove the actual camera app on the device. Once installed, a quick reboot later and you're presented with the Android 4.2 camera app complete with Photosphere, and the Android 4.2 Gallery app required to view them.

Update: The dev just pinged us to say that an update has pushed out that should address a number of bugfixes.

British crash survivor leaped from Egypt balloon

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's lead investigator said Thursday he is seeking to interview the only tourist who survived the crash of a hot air balloon in the southern city of Luxor, a British national who jumped from the balloon after it caught fire and before it plummeted to the ground, killing 19 others, including his wife.

The Briton, Michael Rennie, escaped with only minor injuries and no burns, a neurologist who is treating him at a Cairo hospital, Mahmoud el-Shennawy, told The Associated Press.

The only other survivor ? the balloon's Egyptian pilot, who also jumped out ? suffered heavy burns.

The sightseeing balloon on a sunrise flight Tuesday over the ancient monuments of Luxor was carrying 20 tourists from Britain, Hong Kong, Japan, Belgium, Hungary and France. It was in the process of landing when a fuel line for the burner heating the air in the balloon broke, sparking a fire, according to preliminary indications, investigators have said.

Rennie and the Egyptian pilot, Momin Murad, managed to escape the balloon's gondola when it was still relatively close to the ground. The balloon then rose back up some 300 meters (1,000 feet) into the air. The fire spread to the balloon itself, which burst, sending it plummeting into a sugar cane field.

Witnesses have said some of the tourists still trapped in the burning balloon as it rose jumped to their deaths trying to escape.

Amateur video taken from another balloon flying nearby shows it crashing it back to the earth like a fireball into a sugar cane field.

Rennie told his doctors that "he fell in a muddy area, and this helped him," el-Shennawy said. "There are no fractures. He only has minor bruises ... and scratches." His wife was killed in the crash, the doctor said.

Rennie has also refused to speak to representatives from his own embassy, el-Shennawy said ? apparently overwhelmed with grief over his wife's death. Rennie has declined to speak to reporters, and an Associated Press reporter was not allowed access to his room.

The head of the Civil Aviation Authority's technical investigation into the accident, Walid el-Moqadem, said he has has asked to speak to Rennie, who Egyptian media said did speak with a separate, criminal prosecutor investigating the crash to rule out foul play.

Rennie told criminal investigators that most of those in the balloon squatted when the fire broke out, following the pilot's instructions, according to the Egyptian newspaper Al-Watan.

Investigators have not yet spoken to the pilot because of his injuries.

El-Moqadem said countries of some of the crash victims have asked to join the probe.

He said so far Hong Kong, Britain, Japan and Hungary will not be sending investigators, and will be granted an advisory role in the investigation in line with regulations. He said for now countries of the victims will be appraised of progress through emails.

Investigators are still looking into the causes of the crash and refused to give details, el-Moqadem said earlier. Investigators speaking on condition of anonymity because the probe was still ongoing said initial results suggested a landing cable tore the fuel tube and that the pilot should have shut of a valve that would have prevented the fire from spreading.

El-Shennawy said Rennie is expected to be released Friday and will head straight to the airport.

"Some psychiatrists, and myself, talked with him. He seems to be accepting the situation," he said.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? A senior American official said Friday that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will take Turkey's prime minister to task for "particularly offensive" comments he made this week equating Zionism with a crime against humanity.

Speaking aboard Kerry's plane as he flew from Rome to Ankara, the official said the Obama administration was profoundly concerned by and disappointed in Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's remark at a U.N. conference in Vienna.

The White House on Thursday issued a statement condemning them.

Outrage over the remarks threatens to overshadow Kerry's visit to NATO ally Turkey on his first official overseas trip as secretary of state. He has spent much of his time at the first three stops focusing on the conflict in Syria.

The official said comments like Erdogan's have a "corrosive" effect on US-Turkey relations.

Kerry opened his visit to Turkey's capital with a stop at the U.S. embassy where he paid tribute to a Turkish security guard killed in a Feb. 1 suicide attack against the compound.

Now in its second season, "Scandal" has benefited from word-of-mouth and has been rising in the ratings (even recently beating out its lead in "Grey's Anatomy"). A likable star -- Kerry Washington -- and continued buzz will keep "Scandal" on the schedule.

"Suburgatory"

"Suburgatory," ABC Status: On the bubble Why: The series started Season 2 off strong in the ratings, but its audience has slowly eroded. Its not the worst-performing ABC sitcom, but its buzziness has died down as well.

"Zero Hour"

"Zero Hour," ABC Status: Too soon to tell Why: The Anthony Edwards vehicle debuted to 6.3 million viewers with a 1.3 rating in the key 18-49 demographic, making it <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/15/zero-hour-ratings_n_2695800.html">the least-watched premiere for a scripted series in ABC's history</a>. Obviously, things aren't looking good for the "ER" star's comeback, but maybe the ratings will improve.

"2 Broke Girls"

"2 Broke Girls," CBS Status: Likely to be renewed Why: It's not doing "The Big Bang Theory" numbers, but "2 Broke Girls" has maintained a viewership over its two seasons.

"The Amazing Race"

"The Amazing Race," CBS Status: Likely to be renewed Why: As an Emmy and fan favorite, "The Amazing Race" has been a strong player for CBS.

"The Big Bang Theory"

"The Big Bang Theory," CBS Status: Likely to be renewed Why: Now in its sixth season, "Big Bang" is reaching series-high ratings. Even up against reality powerhouse "American Idol," "The Big Bang Theory" has been delivering with crazy high numbers in the 18-49 demographic, beating out what was once Fox's juggernaut.

"Blue Bloods"

"Blue Bloods," CBS Status: Likely to be renewed Why: The Tom Selleck-fronted police drama is a strong ratings performer for CBS on Fridays. It will likely be back to help launch new Friday shows and produce enough episodes to enter syndication.

"Criminal Minds"

"Criminal Minds," CBS Status: Likely to be renewed Why: As one of CBS's strong procedural players, the series has been steady in the ratings and will likely be renewed to help anchor a night and launch a new drama.

"CSI"

"CSI," CBS Status: Likely to be renewed Why: Of the two "CSI" shows on the air, "CSI" is the stronger player in the TV landscape. The show is nowhere near its earlier ratings, but after such a successful run, CBS would be smart to bring the show -- and some old faces back -- for an abbreviated farewell season.

"CSI: NY"

"CSI: NY," CBS Status: On the bubble Why: The spinoff series will be entering Season 10 in the 2013-2014 season. The ratings have faded over the years, but they're still pretty stable, especially for Fridays. It's a toss up, depending on how well CBS's development slate goes.

"Elementary"

"Elementary," CBS Status: Likely to be renewed Why: One of the very few freshman series hits during the 2012-2013 TV season, CBS is very keen on this modern-day take on Sherlock Holmes. The audience has been steady and the network even gave it the post-Super Bowl timeslot.

"Golden Boy"

"Golden Boy," CBS Status: Too soon to tell Why: CBS certainly has a handsome star at the front of this cop drama, but its late season entry and Friday timeslot could be a hint toward CBS's confidence in the show.

"The Good Wife"

"The Good Wife," CBS Status: On the bubble Why: A former ratings champ, "The Good Wife" has slipped to series low ratings on Sunday nights. Blame football overrun, fan-detested storylines or too many guest stars, but "The Good Wife" is certainly in the danger zone. What it has going for it: star power and critical praise, plus its nearing a good syndication sweet spot.

"Hawaii Five-0"

"Hawaii Five-0," CBSStatus: On the bubble Why: Its ratings -- bouncing around 8-10 million viewers an episode, are great ... if you're a show on NBC. By CBS standards, they're kind of meh, but this show has stars with very active fan followings. CBS could axe the drama to make room for new procedurals, or stick with it to get the show close to syndication gold.

"How I Met Your Mother"

"How I Met Your Mother," CBS Status: Renewed Why: CBS handed out a ninth and final season to this comedy with the entire cast returning. Expect to meet the mother, finally.

"Made In Jersey"

"Made In Jersey," CBS Status: Canceled Why: CBS pulled the plug on this legal drama very early on in the season because of low ratings.

"The Mentalist"

"The Mentalist," CBS Status: On the bubble Why: "The Mentalist" has fallen to mediocre ratings -- by CBS standards -- and could be axed in favor of making room for a new drama.

"Mike & Molly"

"Mike & Molly," CBS Status: Likely to be renewed Why: The ratings are down a little bit from last year, but Melissa McCarthy's star continues to rise. CBS will likely bring the show back for another season.

"NCIS"

"NCIS," CBS Status: Renewed Why: CBS reached a deal with series star Mark Harmon in early 2013, keeping the No. 1 show in America around for a Season 11.

"NCIS: LA"

"NCIS: LA," CBS Status: Likely to be renewed Why: Viewers love their "NCIS," in any form. The ratings have been strong and the network is producing a backdoor spinoff pilot for this spinoff show. A full night of "NCIS" could be in CBS's future.

"Partners"

"Partners," CBS Status: Canceled Why: Low ratings and unfavorable reviews led to the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/16/partners-canceled-cbs_n_2145832.html">early demise</a> of this CBS comedy.

"Person of Interest"

"Person of Interest," CBS Status: Likely to be renewed Why: The series has developed a nice-sized audience, bigger than its first season.

"Rules of Engagement"

"Rules of Engagement," CBS Status: Honestly, who knows Why: This comedy has been on the bubble since it premiered ... yet is now in its seventh season. It's too soon to look at the numbers for this season, but the show has been a midseason success for CBS in the past. However, series co-star <a href="http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/02/07/cbs-orders-comedy-pilot-starring-patrick-warburton/">Patrick Warburton is attached to star in a new pilot</a> ... for CBS.

"Survivor"

"Survivor," CBS Status: Likely to be renewed Why: A strong player for the last 13 years, "Survivor" will likely be back. But due to its <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/14/survivor-ratings-lowest-premiere-ever_n_2687591.html">most recent premiere ratings</a>, we might not see it during the fall season, though a midseason or summer return -- with some new gimmick -- is definitely in the cards for the reality series.

"Two and a Half Men"

"Two and a Half Men," CBS Status: Likely to be renewed Why: CBS wants another season of this bawdy hit, it's just a matter of getting its stars to sign back on.

"Undercover Boss"

"Undercover Boss," CBS Status: Likely to be renewed Why: The show is enjoying life in syndication and its Season 4 numbers are better than most of its third season.

"Unforgettable"

"Unforgettable," CBS Status: Uncanceled Why: CBS canceled the Poppy Montgomery drama last season ... and then revived it! Season 2 premieres Sunday, July 28.

"Vegas"

"Vegas," CBS Status: On the bubble Why: Despite star power, the series hasn't been a breakout hit in the ratings. CBS previously canceled "Unforgettable" (then uncanceled it) last season when it was doing about the same as "Vegas."
