Innovative Project Lets Users Drive Miniature Audis on Giant Track via the iPad

audislotcarsSlot Mods USA and Audi?s Canadian division have paired up on a fascinating new project, creating 1/32 scale Audis that can be raced on a carefully built test track using an iPad to control them. The project was part of a marketing program for the Audi quattro Experience.

The tiny cars are equipped with in-dash cameras, and using a custom built app by Audi, they can be driven using a point-of-view feed and onscreen controls, for the ultimate toy racing experience.

In the documentary that can be seen below (created by ad agency Zulu Alpha Kilo), Slot Mods founder David Beattie builds an amazingly realistic 20ft by 7ft test track, detailing how he creates the track and every single accessory, down to the trees, that goes along with it.

The Slot Mods team also details the process of creating the 1/32 scale Audis, which, by the way, incorporate the quattro?s four-wheel-drive system.

To create the cars, they used industrial laser scanning to create a digital outline of the car, 3D printing to make the shells, a four-wheel-drive chassis made from a third party company, and a specific, carefully calculated arrangement of traction magnets. The tiny cameras that are located in the dash of each car are capable of sending data via Wi-Fi.

Currently Audi?s miniature track is on display in Toronto?s Royal Bank Plaza. The track and the miniature cars are entirely drivable ? make sure to check it out if you?re in Canada. Unfortunately, if you?re not located in Toronto, you?ll have to rely on the documentary to get a look at the incredibly detailed project.

The documentary is a work of art itself, providing great insight on the tiny track, the miniature cars, and all the work that went into creating the entire experience.
